I guess I'll have to buy another one. I bought this as a gift. When I received it, and took one look at the cover, I HAD to take a peek inside. Well, long story short, I couldn't stop myself. One page led to another, and before I knew it, I had pawed my way through the entire book. Since it is now a "used book", I will not give it as a gift, and buy another one for that.Each time I go through it, it brings back more memories....while looking at the vivid pages, I hear the music, remember the rhythm of the dance, feel the passion of my sex driven youth, and smile. Ahhhh. THIS BOOK IS FUN!
This is an excellent survey of not only the recorded music of the '70s and '80s disco era, it is also a lesson in how photographic, illustrative and graphic trends have been and continue to be lead by the nose by the music industry. The book is generous in illustrations and Mr. Hamsley's content addresses the cultural conditions of disco development while maintaining a light academic tone and manner. It is an excellent book for music lovers, graphic professionals and music historians.I'm amused that the book is set in the now-venerable Souvenir, a wildly popular typeface in the 1970s.
For those who have no prejudice, this book is a great "Voyage" to the Disco Era. I felt I was in the 70s again, "rocking the boat"!
I enjoyed this very much. I remember studying the record sleeves and their graphics and it’s nice to learn more about them.
Author Hamsley is the conductor on a love train "To Disco With Love." And love is the sentiment that glints off each page like light specks off a disco ball. There is true scholarship underlying the affection though. Written by someone deeply knowledgeable on their subject, the book provides countless fresh aperçus about some of the best-known songs in the disco canon. But this is more than just a nostalgia trip. With solid scholarship and the vibrant graphics from disco's greatest LP sleeves, the book conclusively affirms disco as one of the most innovative and creative sounds to enliven the 20th century. I thought I knew a fair amount about disco, but from this book I learned about a hundred times more. Recommended unreservedly.
